Northeastern offers refrigerator and freezer recycling program
(6/11/10 - 11/15/10)

Free pickup, no paperwork, $35 reward, no purchase necessary.

A refrigerator recycling program that pays people $35 for each unit scheduled for free pickup is now available to members of Northeastern REMC. The program offers members the opportunity to make money, save money, and get rid of unnecessary and inefficient refrigerators and freezers. Northeastern is joining forces with our power supplier, Wabash Valley Power, to offer this program. Read More Close [x]

In addition to the $35 reward, the program will also benefit members by allowing them to save up to $150 a year in energy costs as a result of lower electricity usage. Typically, the appliances recycled through the program are outdated units used for extra storage and kept in garages and basements. But the convenience of chilling an extra six-pack and some leftovers can come with a steep price. Refrigerators manufactured before 1990 can use three times more electricity than new appliances.

“If your spring cleaning plans include the garage or basement, getting rid of that old clunker refrigerator or freezer gives you a great head start in freeing up space, saving more money, and getting paid $35 just for letting us move it out and haul it away,” said Doug Ferrell, energy advisor for Northeastern.

The refrigerator recycling program is not a traditional rebate program because there is no purchase of a new appliance necessary. To receive the $35 reward, qualifying members only have to schedule a pickup time to have their old, working refrigerator or freezer removed. Appliance recycler JACO Environmental will then recycle them through a process that returns 95 percent of their material back into the manufacturing stream. It also safely extracts various components that are found inside refrigerators, including contaminated oils, mercury and CFCs.

There is a limit of two appliances per household. Refrigerators and freezers to be recycled must be in working order with an inside measurement of 10-30 cubic feet. Program ends November 15. Offer is subject to change without notice.

To schedule the pick up of a refrigerator or freezer for recycling, call 1-877-395-5535 or click on the Fridge/Freezer rebate icon on the right and enter your zip code to be added to our pick-up schedule. Members will receive a bill credit for $35 within four to six weeks after the collection of the appliance.

Home Energy Calculators: Read More Close [x]

Northeastern REMC is proud to provide our members with energy resources like the Home Energy Suite. We hope that you find this tool insightful. A wealth of information is available when you use this suite. It can help you reduce your energy usage thus lowering your monthly energy bill.

The Home Energy Suite Library is specific to home energy systems and it has home, appliance, and lighting calculators that will provide you with tons of information about how energy is used in your home. If you're looking for fun, check out our Kids Korner - a delightful and educational site that will teach children all they ever wanted to know about energy!

Home Energy Calculator:
This calculator will provide you with estimates of energy use costs based on your inputs for your home. The annual and monthly results are to provide a base for comparison purposes only.

Appliance Calculator
With the appliance calculator all you need to do is select which types of appliances you use on a typical day. The calculator will give you estimates of how much energy your appliances are using. In addition, you will also see how much your appliances are costing to operate (estimated annual cost).

Note: *Appliances such as microwaves, VCR’s, and televisions continue to use energy when they are turned off. These “phantom” loads are included in this calculator. Appliance Energy-Use Calculators can only compute approximate energy-use values.

Lighting Calculator
Would you like to see how much money you can save on your electric bill per month or per year just by switching to CFLs? Click on the lighting calculator link. It's easy to use and will provide you with estimates of your current approximate energy use costs based on your input.
