FREE Water Heater Program

Northeastern REMC’s water heater program is available to all of our members.

Effective March 1, 2008, Northeastern REMC will no longer provide free 24 hour, seven days a week maintenance on water heaters that have been supplied through Northeastern or that have our load management switch installed.  However, we will continue to provide this free service if maintenance can be performed during regular business hours, Monday through Friday.

Members experiencing water heater problems on weekends or holidays will be given the options of being reimbursed up to $75.00 for maintenance work completed by a licensed plumber or waiting until the next business day for free repairs by our technicians.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but in an effort to keep rates as low as possible for everyone, we feel this is necessary. If you are in need of service call our office Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to schedule an appointment.

One FREE 50-gallon energy efficient water heater is given to members meeting one of the following criteria:

  • Building a new residence or business
  • Replacing a fossil fuel unit
Units may be purchased for $125.00 under the following conditions:

  • Existing water heater fails and is non-repairable
  • Existing water heater is over twenty (20) years old regardless of its working condition
  • Additional units are needed after receiving (1) free water heater, not to include geothermal storage units

Additional units used for geothermal storage units that do not require a load management switch may be purchased at our cost.

After a member has been qualified by a Northeastern representative, your free water heater may be picked up at our office in Columbia City.

Once the new water heater has been installed, one of our representatives will make an appointment to install a load management switch. The purpose of the switch is to help us lower power demand. Northeastern is charged for demand as well as kilowatthours. This switch allows us to control the amount of demand being consumed during peak periods, which enables us to control our cost. The result is a savings for both Northeastern and you. Since the water heater stores 50 gallons, it is unlikely that there will be any noticeable difference in hot water availability.

The load management switch must be left on the water heater for a minimum of three (3) years. If the switch is removed during that time, we will invoice you for the cost of the water heater.
