Two local teenagers were recently awarded $1000 college scholarships from Northeastern REMC, a member-owned electric cooperative powering six counties in Northeast Indiana. For the past several years, Northeastern REMC (NREMC) selects two high school seniors in their service area to receive these awards.
The first recipient of the NREMC scholarship is Naomi Rubrake, daughter of Martha and Darrin Rubrake. She plans to attend Bethany College in West Virginia where she will study business marketing. Naomi has a long list of volunteer work including participation with The United Way of Whitley County, BABE of Whitley County, various camps, fundraisers and community events in Whitley County. She has also been a customer service associate at Walgreens since November 2018 where she was once awarded employee of the month.
“As demonstrated in her classroom work and her roles within the school and community, Naomi is a strong student and dedicated athlete. Within the classroom when the work has been hard, she has studied harder and found a balance between her sports, activities, and scholastics,” said Mrs. Keener, English teacher at Columbia City High School in her letter of recommendation.
The second scholarship was rewarded to Wyatt Schroeder of Carroll High School in Fort Wayne. Wyatt, son of Jeffery Schroeder, plans on studying engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette. He has previously worked as an umpire at Huntertown Parks and part-time at Chick-Fil-A. He is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a freshman mentorship program. He’s been on the Cross Country and Track team for his entire high school career and delivers groceries on a route in Fort Wayne. His other accolades include being inducted into the National Honor Society and achieved Academic All-State during his senior season of Cross Country.
“He comes to class each day with a positive attitude, and he always gives his best effort,” stated Mr. Degitz, an English teacher at Carroll Highschool, in a recommendation letter he wrote for Wyatt. He concluded, “I have complete confidence that Wyatt will be successful in his post-secondary studies and beyond.”
Northeastern REMC makes their decision based on scholastic achievement, community involvement, and recommendations. “We are proud to offer this scholarship program each year” said Eric Jung, CEO of Northeastern REMC. He continued, “There is no better way to encourage our local students in their pursuit of higher education than giving them financial help.”
